Lamar Jackson Criticizes Ravens Rookie for “Taking a Shot” at GM Eric DeCosta After Learning a Later Pick Earned a Bigger Contract

Baltimore Ravens face tough decision on Lamar Jackson's contract | Marca

BALTIMORE — The Ravens have not even reached the heart of OTAs yet, but one uncomfortable rookie moment has already created conversation inside Baltimore.

According to team chatter, rookie cornerback Chandler Rivers, a fifth-round pick, briefly posted a message that some inside the fanbase viewed as a subtle shot at general manager Eric DeCosta after learning that later-round rookie Adam Randall had landed a more favorable contract structure.

The post was deleted almost immediately.

Rivers later apologized privately, according to people familiar with the situation, and made it clear he did not intend to disrespect the organization, DeCosta, or the teammate whose contract became part of the discussion.

But even after the apology, quarterback Lamar Jackson reportedly felt the moment needed to be addressed.

Jackson, now firmly established as the voice of the Ravens’ locker room, did not attack the rookie personally. But he delivered a sharp reminder about what it means to wear Baltimore’s colors before a player has earned anything on an NFL field.

“Posting something that takes a shot at the GM who brought you here because of a contract issue? In Baltimore, we work, we grind, and we prove we belong,” Jackson said. “Some of us have carried pressure, criticism, and expectations every year just to keep this team chasing greatness. If you don’t value that, you’re only opening the door for someone else to take your spot.”

The message was clear.

In Baltimore, draft position may get a player through the door, but it does not secure a role. Rivers arrived as a late-round cornerback prospect with speed, competitiveness, and a chance to compete for depth in a demanding Ravens secondary. But like every Day 3 rookie, he enters the offseason with no guarantees.

Randall, meanwhile, comes to Baltimore as a late fifth-round running back with physical tools and a chance to push for a developmental role in the backfield and on special teams. His contract situation, whatever the details may be, was never supposed to become a locker-room distraction.

That is why Jackson’s reaction matters.

The Ravens quarterback understands the business side of football better than most. He has faced contract drama, MVP pressure, playoff criticism, and the burden of carrying one of the NFL’s most demanding franchises.

So when a rookie appears frustrated before OTAs even begin, Jackson sees more than a social media mistake. He sees a potential threat to the standard the Ravens are trying to build.

Baltimore’s offseason program is supposed to be about learning the playbook, building chemistry, and proving reliability. For late-round rookies like Rivers and Randall, every meeting, every rep, and every detail matters.

A deleted post will not define Rivers’ career. The apology gives him a chance to move forward. But Jackson’s public stance sends a message to every young player in the building:

Baltimore does not owe anyone a role.

It gives them an opportunity.

And for rookies fighting to survive the first cut, that opportunity can disappear quickly if another player shows more discipline, more humility, and more hunger.
