The Kansas City Chiefs have every reason for a level of desperation when it comes to the current receiver depth chart. Rashee Rice continues to make selfish decisions off the field, continually costing his team. And it is the case yet again, as the receiver has been forced to serve jail time after breaking the terms of his probation agreement. This was days after receiving a knee surgery, so while Rice could be rehabbing in OTAs, he’s instead spending time away from the team due to ill-advised actions.

For the Chiefs, this should introduce the idea of targeting a primary option in the remaining trade or free agent markets, with none making more sense than Chris Olave. The New Orleans Saints star receiver is entering a contract year and is stuck on a Saints team that doesn’t appear to be a viable contender in the NFC. Kansas City can offer picks in exchange for Olave and hand the 26-year-old an extension that will give Patrick Mahomes a reliable target for years to come.

Olave had 1,163 receiving yards in the 2025 season to go along with nine touchdowns in what was underrated production on an average team. For the Saints, it makes sense to trade him, as Olave no longer fits the timeline of their expected contention.

Kansas City adding Olave and extending him takes away the biggest remaining offensive concern and should serve as a wake-up call for Rice. Part of the issue the Chiefs have faced is the fact that they have no second answer that would allow them to part ways with the troubling receiver. Instead, the franchise has continually shown patience and simply hoped that Rice would be willing to take his career seriously and make wise decisions.

The message is clearly not getting through with this latest setback simply being the push that Kansas City needs to go out and make a meaningful addition. Olave seems like the best possible remaining fit with A.J. Brown the only other notable name that could be dealt in the next weeks of the offseason.

Brown has a track record of making waves on his teams, while Olave appears to be a better team fit for the Chiefs and a clear primary target for Mahomes. It shouldn’t take long for chemistry to develop with a pass catcher this talented, giving the Chiefs the one final offensive piece they lack.

For Olave, you’d be stepping into a far better situation and going from one of the most frustrating quarterback situations over the last five years to playing with the league’s most accomplished starter. No question, a deal makes sense for both sides and should be explored.
