NOT A RUMOR ANYMORE. Dallas just grabbed an All-Pro ghost with 839 career tackles – 89 starts, 97 games. The NFC East didn’t see this coming…DT

In a move that sends shockwaves through the NFC East, the Dallas Cowboys have acquired Miami Dolphins All-Pro inside linebacker Jordyn Brooks via trade. The veteran defender, known for his sideline-to-sideline range and relentless pursuit, brings elite production and proven leadership to a Cowboys defense that continues to reshape its identity under Jerry Jones and the front office.

Brooks arrives in Dallas with an impressive résumé: 839 career tackles, 89 starts across 97 games played. His arrival immediately upgrades the linebacker room and adds a high-floor, high-ceiling playmaker alongside the team’s recent additions.

Strategic Fit and Motivation

The Cowboys already added inside linebacker Dee Winters this offseason, positioning him as part of the future alongside DeMarvion Overshown. However, Overshown’s concerning injury history has left the organization seeking additional insurance and competition at the position.

Bringing in Brooks on what is effectively an expiring contract (he is entering the final year of his current deal with no guaranteed money remaining) represents a calculated, low-risk, high-reward move. Sports Illustrated’s Randy Gurzi highlighted the logic behind pursuing Brooks even before the deal was finalized:

“The Cowboys are banking on Winters and DeMarvion Overshown as their starting inside linebackers. That’s not a terrible duo by any means, but Overshown’s injury history should give the front office pause. Instead of crossing their fingers and hoping for the best, the Cowboys should add another playmaker — and a perfect fit could be available.”

By acquiring Brooks, Dallas creates a highly competitive situation in the linebacker corps. The trio of Brooks, Overshown, and Winters will push each other throughout the season, likely elevating the overall performance of the unit.

Contract and Long-Term Flexibility

Brooks’ contract situation gives the Cowboys significant flexibility. Because he is playing on the final year of his deal without guarantees, Dallas can evaluate him in real game conditions this season without long-term financial commitment. This approach aligns perfectly with their roster-building strategy heading into 2027, when both Winters and Overshown will hit free agency.

As Gurzi noted:

“Adding him on an expiring contract would be the perfect move since it ensures Dallas has a strong defense this year and creates competition among Brooks, Overshown, and Winters. That’s ideal… The options would be plentiful for the Cowboys, who could retain the best of the bunch to hopefully pair with Barham assuming he’s ready to start in year two. They could also move on from all three if they decide to go with a younger option in the 2027 NFL draft.”

Impact on the NFC East

The NFC East did not see this coming. Brooks’ arrival strengthens what was already a rising Cowboys defense and adds veteran savvy to a unit that features young, explosive talent. His ability to diagnose plays quickly and deliver big hits in the run game makes him an ideal complement to Dallas’s aggressive defensive scheme.

While the Dolphins move on from a productive player who was seeking a contract extension, the Cowboys get a battle-tested All-Pro who can help them contend immediately.

Jerry Jones and the Dallas front office have once again shown their willingness to make bold, strategic moves to fortify the roster. The addition of Jordyn Brooks may prove to be one of the shrewdest acquisitions of the offseason — a high-level linebacker on a prove-it deal who could anchor the middle of the field for years to come if he performs as expected.

Welcome to Big D, Jordyn Brooks. The Cowboys’ defense just got a whole lot faster — and meaner.
