The Steelers selected Washington in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and he has improved with each passing season.
During his rookie year, Washington was used primarily as a blocker and recorded just seven receptions for 61 yards. In 2024, he posted 19 catches for 200 yards and one touchdown before increasing those numbers to 31 receptions for 364 yards and one touchdown during the 2025 season.

He has also logged more than 500 offensive snaps in each of his first three NFL seasons despite sharing playing time with Pat Freiermuth.
However, even more attention than the $42 million contract extension has been generated by a unique clause reportedly included in the agreement.
According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Washington agreed to what has been called the “Steelers Legacy Clause,” a provision that quickly became one of the most talked-about contract terms in the NFL.
Under the clause, Washington cannot negotiate with another NFL team during the final year of his contract without first giving the Steelers an exclusive opportunity to match or exceed any outside offer.
In addition, the contract includes a post-retirement partnership provision that would allow Washington to transition into player development, scouting, or team ambassador roles if both sides choose to continue the relationship after his playing career ends.
The clause does not prevent Washington from leaving in the future.
But it creates a clear pathway for the Steelers to remain his first choice at every stage of his football journey.
Fans quickly reacted to the unusual provision on social media.
Many began calling it:
“The Handcuffs Nobody Wants to Take Off.”
Unlike many restrictive clauses that often generate controversy in professional sports, this one appears to have the full support of the player himself.
Sources close to Washington say he embraced the idea from the very beginning.
The Steelers tight end reportedly views Pittsburgh as the organization that believed in him when many other teams passed on him during the 2023 NFL Draft.
Washington is also said to have developed strong relationships with Mike McCarthy, Omar Khan, and the veteran leaders inside the Steelers locker room.
The Steelers believe Washington’s best years are still ahead of him.
At 6-foot-7 and nearly 270 pounds, he remains one of the most physically imposing tight ends in the NFL.
His blocking ability has earned league-wide respect, while his receiving production continues to improve each season.
Inside the organization, many believe Washington has not yet reached his true ceiling.
That belief is exactly why Pittsburgh was willing to make a long-term investment.
With a contract worth $42 million, including $21 million guaranteed, and a unique clause designed to strengthen the bond between player and franchise, the Steelers are sending a very clear message.
Darnell Washington is a major part of Pittsburgh’s future.
And for many Steelers fans, that is exactly why this clause has earned such an emotional nickname:
The Handcuffs Nobody Wants to Take Off.
